Bessie’s AI Journey with Enterprise for Youth and Salesforce

Bessie Wang

When Bessie first joined Enterprise for Youth’s AI workshop, she admits that she used to think of artificial intelligence as “this foreign, futuristic, and even potentially scary thing—something that could replace humans.” But after diving into the program and learning how AI agents actually work, her perspective changed completely.

“I think that AI is a very powerful tool that should be used alongside humans to augment our own progress and development,” Bessie said. Through the workshop, she began to see that AI isn’t something reserved for experts—it’s accessible and practical for almost anyone. “It can replace or improve very tedious daily tasks like driving,” she explained. And beyond that, it holds “so much potential to be used as a tool to augment our progress and research in areas like healthcare (such as the) process of discovering new drugs and treatments, modeling climate change, and even improving education.”

One of the projects Bessie is most proud of was building a biomedical vision-language model that “can analyze pneumonia, blood cells, and dermatology scans and detect them through prompts.” Her role focused on racial consciousness prompting in dermatology scans and on identifying the model’s biases in classifying lesions based on skin tone. She shared, “It’s one thing to know how they work, but it’s another to see the process of how they’re built and understand the steps that go into them.”

That hands-on experience made AI feel relevant and inspiring in a new way. “Learning about AI and technology has made me more interested in exploring STEM fields because now I understand how AI connects to so many areas,” she said. “I used to think that it was just coding, but after learning about the many ways AI agents are used during our AI workshop at Enterprise for Youth, it made me see how I could use that technology creatively and use it in many other fields like healthcare, design, entertainment industry etc.”

Bessie also believes AI education is vital for her generation. “Learning about AI is very important, especially for young people and students, because it’s shaping the future of every industry,” she said. Understanding it helps young people “use it responsibly as well as recognizing the risks it can contain.” She also recognizes that “AI isn’t perfect—there are real risks and biases because the data those algorithms learn from are often biased and can lead to further disparities in things like healthcare for minority groups.”

Still, she remains hopeful. “By educating ourselves, we as students can begin to help shape how it’s regulated and guide how we and others use it, instead of just pointlessly fearing it.”

Through Enterprise for Youth and Salesforce’s partnership at Dreamforce, Bessie had the chance to see how her new skills connect to real-world technology and careers. Her journey shows how giving young people exposure to AI can turn curiosity into confidence—and help them see themselves as part of shaping the future of innovation.
